The City of East Chicago, Indiana has embarked upon a macro-scale revitalization of its North Harbor Neighborhood — the restoration of civic pride. A component of this comprehensive plan includes the renovation of two parks located within seven city blocks of each other along the Broadway Corridor: Nunez Park and Callahan Park. The parks are being enhanced with several amenities to instill civic pride, better serve current citizens, and attract new residents. As part of the design phase, community outreach meetings were conducted, with several citizens and communal groups represented — their involvement was integral to developing the program elements featured in the parks.
Nunez Campus — Early in the design phase for the renovation of Nunez Park, the need for a green space linking the park and nearby Lincoln Elementary School became apparent. By providing this "green link" between the park and the elementary school, a campus is developed that connects students to the park and community center without having to cross a street.
Phase 1 features a wrought iron fence with the park name shown in large steel letters. The spacious gateway entrance along Broadway has a bronzed entrance sign informing citizens and visitors of the valor of Joseph M. Nunez, for whom the park is named. Phase 2 links various park elements — a water park, soccer field, tennis and basketball courts, and a tot lot — by way of a paved walking trail. Once completed, the Nunez Campus provides Lincoln Elementary students, community center patrons, and residents alike with a restored recreational amenity.
